After eleven years without releasing new material, Upa+ has unveiled «Ciudad anterior,» its first studio album since «Presente» (2015). The band led by Pablo Ugarte will bring the record to the stage this July, with two special shows in Santiago and Valparaíso.

A comeback more than a decade in the making

Upa+, one of the emblematic names of Chilean pop-rock born in the 1980s, returns with an album that confirms the ongoing relevance of Ugarte’s project. Production was handled by Mariano Pavez, and the result is a set of songs that engages with memory and with the emotional bond we build with the places we inhabit. The preview arrived with the single «Confesiones nocturnas,» which set the introspective mood of the album. The eleven-year gap since «Presente» is no minor detail: in an industry that pushes artists to release relentlessly, the band chose to take the time each song needed to reach its final shape.

A darker, more atmospheric sound

«Ciudad anterior» marks a shift toward contemporary, enveloping textures. Guitars, bass and drums keep a leading role, but the keyboards add denser, more shadowy layers that move away from the band’s bright early pop. The repertoire explores universal emotions —sadness, desire, frustration and everyday challenges— from a mature and personal perspective. As Ugarte explained, the album grows from the idea of a place that remains part of us: «Despite all the changes, we keep moving through it because it is our place in the world.» That premise runs through the entire record and gives it a cohesion that goes beyond any single track.

A bridge between generations

Beyond nostalgia, the new work acts as a bridge between the fans who followed the band from the beginning and a younger audience now rediscovering Chilean pop-rock from the 1980s. The bet on current textures, without abandoning the group’s identity, makes it clear that the goal is not to repeat past formulas but to prove that those songs can keep growing. It is a move many veteran artists attempt and few pull off so naturally.

Two dates to experience the album live

The official launch will take place on Friday, July 11 at the historic Blondie venue in Santiago, an intimate setting perfect for discovering the new material. A week later, on July 18, the band will move to the Teatro Municipal de Valparaíso, where they will share the bill with Electrodomésticos, another cornerstone of the national scene. Both shows promise to run through the classics that shaped several generations alongside the freshly released songs, in a format designed for audiences to experience the full album live.
