Figure 03: The Humanoid Robot Now Working Alongside Humans at a BMW Factory

24 julio, 2026 · WEB MUSICA · 1 min lectura

At BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, a humanoid robot named Figure 03 has started sorting parts of very different shapes, sizes, and weights to supply the BMW X3 assembly line. Here’s a closer look at exactly what the robot does, the technical upgrades it brings over its predecessor, and why this pilot matters for the future of industrial robotics.

From lab demo to a real production line

Figure 03’s job is to take components arriving in unsorted containers and organize them onto carts that feed the assembly line, following a specific sequence. That’s harder than it sounds: unlike the repetitive tasks traditional robotic arms already handle well, the parts here constantly vary in shape, size, and weight, forcing the robot to adjust its grip on the fly. According to BMW, it’s precisely that kind of variability that serves as the real test of whether a humanoid robot can move beyond a trade-show demo and become a dependable worker on an actual factory floor.

Hands with built-in cameras and safer materials

Compared with its predecessor, Figure 02, the new model features soft materials that reduce risk during contact with people, cameras built directly into the hands for more precise grasping, and more sensitive tactile sensors that let it adjust force depending on the part being handled. Together, these upgrades add up to noticeably finer dexterity, which is essential when working alongside human operators in a shared space.

A collaboration with nearly a decade of history behind it

This pilot didn’t come out of nowhere. Figure 02 had already spent ten months working at BMW, helping with sheet-metal assembly and contributing to the production of more than 30,000 X3 units, while an earlier model, Figure 01, had been tested in even earlier stages. Figure 03 was formally introduced in October 2025 and is now deployed in Building 52 of the Spartanburg plant, the same site where production of the electric BMW iX5 will soon begin. All of this is part of BMW iFactory, the automaker’s global digitalization initiative, which combines 3D simulations with AI-based vision and audio systems to plan out every workstation before any physical equipment is installed.
