China has begun assigning a unique identity code to every humanoid robot that leaves its factories, and the count has already passed 28,000 registrations. Here we explain how the system works and why it marks a turning point in how automation is governed.

A 29-character license plate for each robot

The registry was launched in May 2026 by the Hubei Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center. Each machine receives a 29-character identifier inspired by China’s 18-digit citizen ID, with eleven additional characters added on top. That code follows the robot throughout its entire life cycle, from the assembly line to its final decommissioning. So far, more than 28,000 units across roughly 200 different models have been catalogued.

Why traceability matters

The main goal is to close a governance gap that widens as the deployment of these machines accelerates. With over a hundred active manufacturers in the country, Unitree among them, keeping a reliable record makes it possible to know who built each robot, where it operates and under what conditions. The identifier works like a kind of medical history: it records the model, the manufacturing batch and the machine’s movements over time. The initiative anticipates a scenario in which thousands of units will coexist with people in factories, hospitals and homes, and where accountability for failures or accidents must be clearly established.

A large-scale industrial bet

The move is part of a sizable investment: during 2025, China allocated close to 3.4 billion dollars to robotics and embodied intelligence, a figure well above that of other regions. Applications are already being tested in the field, from industrial deployments to trials in agricultural crops. State-owned companies such as State Grid Corporation plan to add thousands of these machines to their operations in the coming years.

What this trend leaves us

Beyond the sheer volume, what truly matters is the shift in approach: robotics is moving from a laboratory experiment to regulated infrastructure, with standards, identity and accountability. Other countries are likely to watch this model closely and move toward similar certification schemes.
