Chilean quartet Peak Level released their new single «Primero de Agosto» (First of August) on August 1, a composition that explores grief and memory from a deeply personal place. A song built around the stages of grief

«Primero de Agosto» doesn’t follow a conventional metal song structure: it’s conceived as an emotional journey in three parts. It opens with dark passages that reflect the initial anger and helplessness, moves into a calmer melodic depth, and closes with an instrumental intensity that works as catharsis. Keyboardist Byron Llanos explained that «there are processes in life that arrive with a lot of anger and helplessness,» an idea that runs through the entire piece and aims to connect with anyone who has faced loss at any stage of life, not just one specific experience.

The people behind Peak Level

The band is made up of Mauricio Quivira on vocals and guitar, Carlos Carrasco on bass and backing vocals, Byron Llanos on keyboards and backing vocals, and Fabián Vargas on drums. The single was released under Peak Level Records, the group’s own independent label, and follows their live album «Bootleg: Live Mutations,» which had documented the band’s rawest side on stage. With this new single, Peak Level opens a different creative chapter, more introspective and carefully produced in every detail.

A sound that echoes classic progressive rock

Musically, «Primero de Agosto» combines the intensity of metal with melodic passages and introspective atmospheres, in a style some listeners have compared to Deep Purple’s 1970s progressive rock. Production and mixing were handled by Rodrigo Aranda, recording by Alejandro González, and mastering by Pablo Pedemonte, all completed at Variable Studio. Creative direction, visual design, and photography for the release were led by Jesús Pérez. The single is now available on all digital streaming platforms.
