Nevada’s transportation authority approved permits this week allowing Tesla, Waymo and Uber to operate up to 8,000 autonomous vehicles in Las Vegas over the next twelve months. Here is how the permit was split among the companies, how realistic those numbers actually are, and why the traditional taxi industry is already pushing back.

A landmark permit for Clark County

The Nevada Transportation Authority unanimously approved three permits enabling commercial robotaxi services in Clark County, home to Las Vegas. Tesla was authorized to deploy up to 5,000 vehicles, Waymo can add up to 1,000 units, and Uber, through partnerships with Motional and Zoox, will bring another 1,000. Add to that the permit Zoox already held for 100 robotaxis, and the total possible fleet reaches 8,000 vehicles operating in the area over the coming year. It is one of the broadest regulatory openings the self-driving industry has seen so far, and it confirms Las Vegas as one of the major urban testing grounds for the technology.

Between the legal ceiling and operational reality

A permit for 5,000 cars does not mean Tesla will deploy them all right away. Eric Early, the company’s chief engineer, was candid about it: he acknowledged the figure works as a hard ceiling, and that the company would be satisfied reaching around 2,500 vehicles in operation during the first year. Expansion will initially concentrate on the so-called «Golden Triangle,» the area connecting the airport to Las Vegas Boulevard, while Motional is also testing downtown and in the Town Square shopping district. It is a familiar pattern in this industry: permits set the maximum ceiling, but the real pace of rollout depends on vehicle availability, route validation and each company’s operational capacity.

Pushback from the traditional taxi industry

Not everyone welcomed the decision. The Livery Operators Association and several taxi companies formally opposed the process, citing the risk of road oversaturation and unfair competition against an industry already running on thin margins. Uber, for its part, advocated for a hybrid approach: combining human drivers with autonomous vehicles for a gradual transition, rather than flooding the market overnight with robotic fleets. The episode captures a tension many cities around the world are facing today: how to integrate self-driving technology without abruptly displacing jobs and infrastructure built up over decades.
